As a beginner I completely understand this! It makes so much sense! I think many of us try to sing it to sound like Whitney Houston but her voice and strength and power is unmatched therefore when we sing it properly without so much forced power then we sound so much better but nothing like Whitney so it feels incorrect. Did I make sense here? 😂

Yes! I have been searching for an explanation for this vocal technique for a long time. It has a bit of an Irish quality to it, but it’s not lilting or keening. I used to describe it as like a crack or an out of breath sound. NOBODY does it like Dolores. She’s not out of breath she’s just amazing. It sounds so painful and nuanced and emotional. The best advice I ever got from a vocal coach was “you are not singing. You are acting. You need to make the words of the song mean something to you.” There is no art without emotion.

Oh my god. I never realized that I sang all of my notes in the back of my mouth until now. I was a soprano in middle school chorus, and I remember our teacher telling us that we should be sending the note further back in my mouth to sound more "mature." I kept that advice to heart and didn't realize it was specific to hitting high notes. This also explains why the director of my high school's musical told me he's never heard someone's voice come from where in the throat mine does before. This is going to help a lot. Thanks!

I LOVE you! Not only do I see results using your tips, exercises, etc, this warmup is literally like child’s play. I’m 72 years young and sang professionally for 25 years. I stopped singing altogether when I chose to go to law school. Recently, I decided to record the songs I wrote as a legacy for my grandchildren. All but 4 of the songs are on cassettes. You have given me the vocal tools to reawaken my voice. Thank you so very much!

Just discovered your channel and love it! I like the way you narrow the scope of what you’re presenting and am incorporating your tips after 18 years of not singing. I just moved to Texas from Colorado! Miss hills and mountains. Having difficulty hitting the lower notes. If I come down (take a 😢dive) from a high note to a low note, my cords don’t close and I’m growling. What to do?
